Former actress Shilpa Shirodkar opens up on being fat-shamed, losing ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ to Malaika Arora

New Delhi: Former actress Shilpa Shirodkar in a recent interview revealed how she was body-shamed and called fat because of which she lost several films. Speaking to The Times of India, he said, “If I had to debut in today’s time, I don’t think I would get work. Imagine they used to call me fat in the 90s, now god knows what they would call me. About losing out on Chaiyya Chaiyya, she said, “Farah Khan had brought the song and she said she was considering me for it. But then they thought I was too fat so they chose Malaika.

He even said that today there is no second chance because of the tough competition. “I think then we had the opportunity to learn every day, producers, directors and actors were always happy to help and mold young actors. I think today the competition is so tough that everyone has to come prepared and unfortunately there will be no second chance.”

He even said that if she had debuted today, she would not have got any work. “If I were to debut in today’s time, I don’t think I would get the job. Imagine they used to call me fat in the 90s, God knows what they would call me now,” he told The Times of India.

He also thanked Anil Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty who were instrumental in getting him work in those days. “I remember there was a casting for a Telugu film in the 90s and Anil Kapoor was shooting in Hyderabad, and he actually took my photo album to show the producer and director and then, I got the film too. ”

“It is because of Mithun da that I am working in this industry. When I lost out to Sautan Ki Beti and Boney Kapoor’s then-titled Junglee, the industry wrote me off as a wretch. It was Dada who gave me a role in Corruption and my journey in this wonderful industry began,” he said.

Shilpa Shirodkar is the elder sister of former actress and Mahesh Babu’s wife Namrata Shirodkar. She has worked in several films in the 90s era including Kishen Kanhaiya, Prateeksha, Aankhen, Khuda Gawah, Gopi Kishan, Bewafa Sanam, Mrityudand and Gaja Gamini.
