Scott Galloway, millionaire founder and marketing professor at New York University, feels young professionals should acquire storytelling skills.

In today’s evolving job market, concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various industries are prompting many to reassess their career paths. While some advocate for learning AI and coding for better job prospects, entrepreneur Scott Galloway suggests a different approach. In a recent CNBC Make It interview, Galloway emphasized the importance of storytelling skills for young professionals. As a marketing professor at New York University, he believes that while technology will advance, the ability to convey ideas through compelling narratives supported by data and visuals will remain invaluable. Additionally, Galloway cautioned against overreliance on AI tools like ChatGPT, advising professionals to instead focus on becoming domain experts in their respective fields.

The entrepreneur and professor said, “If I could give my 13 and 16-year-old one competence that I think would stand the test of time, it’d be storytelling.” According to him, the type of storytelling may not be fixed, as communication platforms are constantly evolving. What truly matters is developing the “ability to write well, an ability to articulate ideas and an ability to present ideas with data, infographics, slideshows.”

Scott Galloway emphasises the significant impact of storytelling on a brand’s success or failure. He cautions against excessive reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT, noting the unpredictability of future technologies. Galloway highlights the uncertainty surrounding the longevity of tools like ChatGPT and questions the ongoing relevance of coding skills. Advising young professionals to diversify their skill sets, he suggests focusing on timeless abilities like storytelling, which remain valuable regardless of technological advancements.

Galloway underscores the importance of expertise in achieving success, emphasising its role in garnering recognition and creating future opportunities. Becoming an expert means you become important to others and that expertise can open up many opportunities in the future. He said, “The specific crowds out the general. Find a niche, no matter how narrow it is and try and own it. Commit to being one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on a domain. You’re never going to be an expert in anything if you don’t enjoy it.”

Scott Galloway is a millionaire who sold his company for over $130 million in 2017.
