Forest workers foil an attempt to smuggle sandalwood. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Four persons have been arrested for trying to cut sandalwood trees from a leased land near Thadagam Reserve Forest on Tuesday.
Police have identified them as 55-year-old Jolly Jacob from Wayanad, 44-year-old M Moideen from Palakkad, 54-year-old G Jagadish of Narasimhankenpalayam and 36-year-old R Rajendran from Athikadavu near Mettupalayam.
According to forest officials, the forest personnel, who were on regular patrolling in the forest between Kugoundampalayam and Kattanchimalai near Perinaikanapalayam, found the men around 1 pm. He informed his superiors, who reached the spot along with a six-member team and surrounded the miscreants who were trying to cut the sandalwood trees. He was taken to the forest office for questioning.
“The gang was stopped even before the trees fell,” a forest department official said.
The department has imposed a fine of ten thousand rupees on each man.
