Deputy Conservator of Forests KN Basavaraju said a proposal to notify the three trekking trails would be submitted to the Karnataka Eco Tourism Development Board (KEDB). “We are working on the technical glitches. The idea is to connect the local people and help them earn income through this initiative. Village forest committees will be formed under the supervision of the forest department. The members of these committees will monitor the trekking activity, and alert us in case of any illegal activity like felling of trees or poaching in the forest. The committees will also be entrusted with the responsibility of issuing tickets. One of the committee members will be trained as a guide by the KEDB, and will receive remuneration from the forest department,” Basavaraju said.
However, the boundaries of these routes have not yet been decided, the DCF said. He further said that a list of ‘dos and don’ts’ would be made on a board, and baggage of tourists would be checked to ensure that they did not carry plastic into the forest. Basavaraju said, “They should return with all their belongings that they had taken to the forest.”
Sakleshpur environmentalist Kishore Kumar welcomed the initiative, which he said will ensure that the movements of visitors are monitored, and mischief is prevented.
Arasikere-based trekker Yuvraj and a pedestrian from Sakleshpur, Ravish Hulikal also welcomed the move by the forest department. “Trekking should help in creating awareness about the environment, and should help in the study of biodiversity. Involvement of local people is commendable as they play an important role in the conservation of forests,” he said.
