Foreign missions in Kabul issue joint call for Taliban ceasefire – Times of India

A senior delegation of Afghan leaders met with the Taliban’s political leadership in the Qatari capital over the past two days, but a Taliban statement issued late Sunday made no mention of stopping Afghanistan’s escalating violence.
“This Eid al-Adha, the Taliban must lay down their arms for good and show the world their commitment to the peace process,” the representative of 15 missions and NATO said Tuesday, referring to the Muslim holiday in Afghanistan.
The joint statement was supported by Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, European Union Delegation, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, senior civilian representatives of Britain and the United States and NATO.
Over the past few Eid holidays, the Taliban have called for a temporary ceasefire, saying they want to allow Afghans to spend peacefully.
No such announcement has been made this time, as the Taliban increasingly wield regional gains in near-unprecedented levels of nationwide fighting.
The insurgents have been promoted as foreign forces, nearing a full withdrawal after 20 years of fighting.
Monday’s statement also condemned rights violations, such as recent media-reported attempts to close schools and media organizations in areas occupied by the Taliban, which have previously denied such claims.
