Following medical advice, Queen Elizabeth II will not attend UN climate talks

LONDON – Britain’s 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II will not attend the COP26 UN climate conference in Glasgow after an overnight hospital stay with doctors “advising her to rest”, her Buckingham Palace office said on Tuesday.

“Her Majesty has decided with regret that she will no longer travel to Glasgow”, the palace said in a statement, adding that “she will deliver an address to the assembled delegates via a recorded video message”. “

The Queen worked a busy schedule in early October, but last week canceled a trip to Northern Ireland on medical advice.

On Thursday, she spent the night at the private Edward VII Hospital in London for a “preliminary investigation”.

The stay – his first since 2013 – and the palace’s delay in revealing it has raised fears over his health given his age.

But the Queen resumed official duties on Tuesday, greeting new ambassadors to Britain in a video audience at Windsor Palace west of London.

Elizabeth II has reigned since 1952 and will celebrate her platinum jubilee the following year.

At public events almost daily, she always appears to be in good health – although she was first seen using a stick at a major public event this month.
