Possibility of flight service from Puri airport by 2022-23

Flight operations from Puri in Odisha are likely to start by 2022-23 as the work on setting up the international airport has begun, state Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera said on Sunday.

The process of identifying a suitable location for the development of the airport has been initiated. Behera said that all necessary steps are being taken for the construction of the airport in the pilgrimage town.

“We have already held a meeting with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other concerned departments for the development of the airport. The state government is providing all necessary assistance in this regard,” the minister said. has been identified, construction activities will be started.

“If everything goes according to plan, we will see flight services from Puri in 2022-23,” he added.

Last month, an AAI team had visited the pilgrim city of Puri to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the proposed airport. He visited the proposed site at Girala near Sipasrubali area on Puri-Brahmagiri road.

The Rath Yatra of Puri is a world famous annual event which draws lakhs of pilgrims and visitors from all over the world. Hence the proposed airport will help bring Jagannath devotees from across the world to Puri and help promote Jagannath culture across the world, an official said.

Earlier, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set up an international airport at Puri in the name of Shri Jagannath International Airport.
