Five foods you should avoid reheating

Most of us lead a fast-paced life in today’s world. Often, there is hardly enough time for cooking. In most cases the solution is to reduce the amount of leftover food by reheating it. Since most families now have fewer members, it makes sense to consume the same meal twice a day. It’s simple, saves time and doesn’t require a lot of energy. However, this practice is not good for health at all. Eating stale food can harm your body. There are at least five foods that you should ideally never reheat.

1) Eggs: Eggs should be eaten immediately after cooking and should never be overheated. Egg protein is rich in nitrogen. When heated, nitrogen produces carcinogenic substances that can put you at risk of cancer.

2) In many households, rice is prepared for lunch and dinner at the same time. This means that once cooked rice is divided into two for lunch and dinner. According to the Food Standards Agency, reheating cold rice can cause food poisoning. If rice is left at room temperature after taking it out of the oven, it will start to grow bacteria.

3) Potatoes are rich in vitamin B6, potassium and vitamin C. Reheating potatoes causes bacteria called Clostridium botulinum to grow. Also, when cooked or boiled potatoes are kept at room temperature, it breeds bacteria that become more harmful when the potatoes are reheated.

4) When the chicken is heated a second time, the protein molecules break down. That protein takes on a different form on heating again. In many cases, harmful bacteria remain in the chicken even after cooking. If cooked chicken is microwaved, bacteria are spread throughout the meat.

5) Do not reheat any kind of vegetable, especially carrots. When cooked vegetables are reheated, the nitrates in them produce chemicals called nitrosamines, which can cause cancer and respiratory diseases in children.
