A Delhi court on Tuesday acquitted an accused in a case related to the communal violence of February 2020. This is the first decision in the Delhi riots case.

The man was charged with unlawful assembly during the riots and looting a shop case in which over 50 people lost their lives in northeast Delhi.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat observed that there is no identity of the accused and the testimony of witnesses is completely contrary to each other. “It is a clear cut acquittal,” he said.

According to the police, Suresh, now acquitted, allegedly broke the lock of a shop in Delhi’s Babarpur Road and robbed it on the evening of February 25, along with a huge mob of rioters carrying iron rods and sticks.

This is the first Delhi riots case in which the verdict has been delivered. Trial is going on in many cases related to violence.

Communal clashes broke out in northeast Delhi in February 2020, following violence between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and its protesters, killing at least 53 people and injuring over 700.
