The first symptom of kidney failure is water retention, which leads to swelling.

According to experts, due to too much fluid in the tissues, one of the first symptoms of developing or existing kidney disorder can be swelling of the feet, ankles and legs, which leave dimples on the skin when pressure is applied.

Doctors at Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) have advised that people suffering from this type of problem should consult their doctors.

Prof Vishwajit Singh, head of the department of nephrology, said, “About 30 per cent of kidney patients come late and then, we have to depend on dialysis or opt for kidney transplant.”

“Despite this, we can detect kidney disease with two simple tests. These tests are free in many government hospitals and available at minimal charges in medical institutions.”

Dr. Madhavi Gautam, Associate Professor of Nephrology, said, “High BP and diabetic patients often have kidney problems because high BP can constrict the blood vessels, which eventually damages and weakens them. Also, In patients with diabetes, the kidneys have to work harder to filter excess sugar out of the blood.”
