First J&K statehood, then elections, not otherwise, Omar Abdullah said days after PM-Gupkar alliance meeting

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and vice-president of National Conference parties on Saturday said mainstream politicians from the region reject the “delimitation, elections and then statehood” sequence of events proposed by the commission.

“We want delimitation, statehood and then elections. If you want to hold elections, you have to restore statehood first,” Omar Adbullah said.

The NC leader further said that leaders of political parties “did not discuss anything outside the agenda of the Gupkar alliance” during the three-hour meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

“We were not called there (in PM’s all-party meeting) as an alliance. Had this been the case, only one person would have been invited from the alliance. He said that we did not say anything in the meeting which is outside the agenda of Gupkar Alliance.

He said, as far as the Delimitation Commission is concerned, the party has made it clear that they have authorized Farooq Abdullah to consider it as and when required. No new approach to the National Convention has been adopted by the Delimitation Commission. Ghulam Nabi Azad said on behalf of all of us that we do not accept this deadline.

According to election officials, delimitation is the process of “setting the boundaries or limits of territorial constituencies in a country or a province having a legislative body”.

During the meeting, the Union Home Minister reiterated the commitment of the Central Government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to JK leaders, PM Modi said that his government wants statehood to be returned to Jammu and Kashmir and elections should be held at the earliest. He also sought to address the concerns of the leaders regarding the distrust of the people in the Valley.

National Conference leader and former CM of the then state Omar Abdullah said that he told the PM that there is an atmosphere of mistrust between the Center and the Valley. Umar said, ‘Trust has been broken.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mehbooba Mufti said, “Muskurake PM se kaha Kasmhir ke log bahut pareshan hai…Saans le to andar kar dete hai (I told the PM with a smile that people in Kashmir are worried. They are jailed at the drop of a) hat).”
