Kolkata: Trinamool Congress nominated ministers on Thursday Firhad Hakim | As the next mayor of Kolkata after the meeting of the newly elected councilors of the municipal body.
Hakim, who won Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) ward 82, is a former mayor of the city and was appointed administrator of the civic body in 2020 after the term of the first board expired, but elections could not be held due to the pandemic.
Hakim, who is also an MLA from Kolkata Port assembly constituency, holds the transport and housing portfolios in the state cabinet.
Hakim said, “I would like to thank Mamata Banerjee again for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of Kolkata. I have been appointed as the leader of the party and after taking oath as the mayor, I am going to make the manifesto.” I will work towards implementing it.” The city’s Muslim mayor said.
He became the mayor of Kolkata in December 2018 after the sudden exit of Sovan Chatterjee.
South Kolkata Lok Sabha MP Mala Roy, who was re-elected councilor from Ward 88, was made the president of the KMC after a meeting held at the Maharashtra residence here. She was also the chairperson of the civic body in the earlier term.
Kashipur-Belgachia MLA Atin Ghosh, who became a councilor from Ward 11, has been again appointed as the deputy mayor of the municipal body.
All 134 newly elected councilors of 144 ward KMC were present in the meeting.
In the elections held on Sunday, the BJP won three wards, while the Left Front and the Congress won two wards each. Three independent candidates also won the election.
The results were declared on Tuesday.
