Thiruvananthapuram: Finance Minister KN Balagopal said here on Wednesday that the financial crisis the state is facing will not deter the government from making significant investments in the higher education sector. He was inaugurating the concluding ceremony of a two-day workshop organized by the State Council of Higher Education to develop a roadmap for quality improvement in the sector. “The government is committed to make much-needed investments and recruitments in the field of higher education,” he said.
He also called for proactive intervention by universities to promote academia-agriculture and industry ties. “Universities should identify new research areas and projects. Academic discourses and research activities should be developed so that they have direct links with agriculture and industry. Universities should consider the development of simple equipment which is much needed in agriculture and construction sectors. are,” he said.
Higher Education Minister R Bindu said that the government will take follow-up action based on the suggestions in the two-day workshop. “The roadmap will be prepared with proper understanding of the shortcomings and strengths of the existing system,” she said.
