Film ticket pricing for MAA elections: Controversies that will dominate Tollywood in 2021

Many films of the South film industry set big records at the box office in 2021. Telugu and Tamil films were seen dominating the silver screen in North India as well. Movies like Akhand and Pushpa: The Rise were in the news for their stellar performances at the box office.

Pawan Kalyan Vs AP Govt on movie ticket pricing

Telugu megastar Pawan Kalyan was seen targeting the Andhra Pradesh government while opposing the new bill on film ticket policy. The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to launch a portal for online booking of movie tickets for single screen and multiplex theatres, which will also bring down the cost of tickets significantly. This has triggered a tussle between the ruling YSR Congress Party and Pawan Kalyan. During the release of his film Vakil Saab in April, Pawan Kalyan alleged that the government was targeting the film fraternity due to his political rivalry with him. The war of words broke out in September with Pawan Kalyan and Cinematography Minister Perni Nani making derogatory remarks against each other on Twitter. Vakeel Saab was Pawan Kalyan’s comeback film after a break of almost three years.

Panja Sai Dharam Tej Bike Accident

Actor Sai Dharam Tej was hospitalized for nearly 45 days in September following an accident in Hyderabad. He suffered multiple injuries including a collarbone fracture when Sai’s sports bike slipped on the road. Veteran Tollywood star Chiranjeevi’s nephew Sai was discharged from the hospital on 10 November. Rayadurgam police had registered a case of speeding against Sai Dharam Tej.

Controversial movie ticket prices bill

Andhra government’s bill to regulate online sale of movie tickets sparked controversy. The Telugu film fraternity, including some big actors and directors, has opposed the bill. Andhra Pradesh government proposes to launch a website for online sale of movie tickets for single screen and multiplex theatres. The proposed bill would also limit the prices of movie tickets.

MAA Election

Movie Artists Association (MAA) is the apex body of actors in the Telugu film industry and has over 900 members. Elections are held every two years to choose the governing body of the association. Young actor Manchu Vishnu, considered close to Chiranjeevi, became the President after the election in October. However, ahead of the elections several senior actors were seen entering into a war of words. Veteran actor Prakash Raj, who is contesting for the post of President, alleged that Mohan Babu was influencing voters. On the other hand, Pawan Kalyan criticized Mohan Babu for showing his loyalty to the YSRCP government on the issue of ticket pricing.
