Boys used to hooting when they came out

At that time the number of girls in IIT Bombay was very less. There were only 70 girls against three thousand male students. In such a situation, the initial female students of IIT had to face a lot of problems. The boys used to hooting often at night. Remarks were made even when he was seen alone or with a male student.

His hostel was not considered as ‘Student Hostel’

The then IIT Bombay had only 1 hostel for girls. In which only 9 girls lived. The names of the boys’ hostels ranged from hostel number 1 to 9. Whereas Girls Hostel was not called ‘Student Hostel’. In such a situation, Chayanika Shah, who was studying MA Physics from there and other female students, had launched a campaign. After which his hostel was given the status of ‘Student Hostel-10’.

Even after being less in number in the campus, girls also started raising their voice in the same period. She used to speak openly on the injustices happening in the campus. He had made his own rules and regulations for his hostel. Which later the administration also had to accept.

Today girls have emerged as power in science

In the 1970s, in the midst of all the difficulties, girls who came out of school achieved a big position in science. Chayanika herself became a lecturer in a college. Later he left teaching and devoted his full time to the Feminist Science Movement.
