FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: England hosted by Poland; Germany, Italy Head

Damien Szymanski led the stoppage-time equalizer as Poland ended England’s 100% record in Group I to draw their World Cup qualifiers 1-1 on Wednesday.

Harry Kane put England ahead with a thumping strike in the 72nd minute as Gareth Southgate’s side prepared for a sixth straight win.

But in the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Szymanski nodded to Robert Lewandowski in a floated cross as Poland kept their hopes of qualifying alive.

“A wonderful feeling. I’m glad we managed to score this last minute. I’m happy,” Simanzki said. “I have worked hard for this, struggled with injuries. Playing against England, scoring a goal is like a dream come true.”

England have 16 points from six matches, followed by Albania with 12 points, Poland with 11 points and Hungary with 10 points.

The top team in the group qualifies for next year’s World Cup in Qatar and is the second-place finisher in the playoffs.

Sane inspires Germany to defeat Iceland

Winger Leroy Sane scored a goal and scored another as Germany registered three consecutive victories in a stunning 4-0 win over Iceland in World Cup qualifying Group J on Wednesday.

The Germans took the lead in the fifth minute when Sane played in Serge Gnabry to score, and after a lengthy VAR review for a potential offside, the goal stood.

The visitors added another 20 minutes later when Antonio Rudiger was left unmarked to score with a header from a Joshua Kimmich free kick.

A constant threat with his quick dribbling and precise passing, Sane effectively killed the game when he tossed the ball over the roof of the net after another swaying German attack 11 minutes into the second half.

Werner added a late fourth that hit the left-hand post and bounced before turning back over the line to complete an encouraging team performance.

The Germans, under new coach Hansi Flick, have scored a maximum of nine points in their first three matches, scoring 12 goals and not conceding a single one.

Germany top the group with 15 points, four ahead of Armenia. Romania is third with 10 points, with four games left, while Iceland is fifth with four points.

Italy beat Lithuania 5-0

Italy registered their first win since becoming European champions as strikers Moise Kean and Giacomo Raspadori registered a 5–0 win over Lithuania to consolidate their hold on the top spot in World Cup qualifying Group C.

The two 21-year-olds impressed their manager by lighting up the first half, as Keane netted twice on either side of his own goal from Edgars Utkas and Raspadori also scored on his country debut.

“Everything is in their head and their feet. If they are committed and take work seriously, they have a great future. But it’s up to them,” Italy manager Roberto Mancini told RAI.

It was the first time that Italy, who suffered disappointing draws against Bulgaria and Switzerland in their last two qualifiers, scored four goals in the first 30 minutes of the match.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo inadvertently added a fifth when his second-half cross-shot settled into the bottom corner as the Azzurri side comfortably extended their record international unbeaten run to 37 matches.

Italy are on top with 14 points, six ahead of second-placed Switzerland after a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland. Lithuania was at the bottom with zero points.

In Belfast, Bailey Peacock-Farrell was a hero for Northern Ireland as the goalkeeper saved a first-half penalty from Haris Seferovic to earn a 0–0 draw against Switzerland.

Spain overtakes Kosovo

Goals from Pablo Fornals and Ferran Torres gave Spain a 2-0 win over Kosovo in World Cup qualifying Group B on Wednesday and pulled them back into an automatic qualification dispute.

Fornals produced a fine near-post finish from the angle on 32 minutes after a smart build-up play from Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata.

Torres won in a counter-attack in the 90th minute. After initially flagged offside, the target was awarded after a VAR check.

Luis Enrique’s side became clear at the top of the group with 13 points from six matches, four ahead of Sweden, who have played two matches less.

Greece beat Sweden 2-1 on Wednesday to move up to third place with six points.

Phantom scores for Belgium in narrow win over Belarus

Dennis Phantom’s first-half goal secured a narrow 1-0 win for Belgium over Belarus in Kazan on Wednesday to move it closer to World Cup qualification.

The midfielder’s 33rd-minute strike kept Belgium unbeaten in Group E as it moved nine points ahead of Czech Republic, who have played one game less, and Wales, who have two games in hand.

Belarus, who did not upset Belgium in the game, have now lost four of the five qualifiers and are second from the bottom of the group.
