A software engineer among the 12,000 employees Google has laid off has said he was fired by his employer just days after returning to work from a bereavement leave following the death of his mother.
Tommy York, who lives in San Francisco, US, wrote in a LinkedIn post that his mother passed away in December 2022 after battling stage-four cancer.
York wrote, “I was laid off from Google last week. I found out on the fourth day from bereavement leave for my mother, who died of cancer in December.”
“It’s unclear how the lay-offs were scheduled, and perhaps what drove me more toward the year I was laid off. I started at Google in December, 2021, and my mom was hired the following year.” I was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in February, almost when formal orientation ended and I was placed on projects,” he said.
He further added that his ending “felt like a slap in the face, like a hit when you’re down”.

The professional thanked the company for the “generous” severance package and said he would take a break of two months to re-centre.
