Fearing cross-border threat, Punjab CM urges PM Modi to resume talks with protesting farmers

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to interact with the protesting farmers amid rising terror threats from across the border ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

A statement issued by the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that Captain Amarinder Singh has also proposed to lead an all-party meeting to hold talks with the protesting farmers.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said earlier this month that 200 people would protest near Parliament from July 22 in view of the existing farmers’ protest.

Tikait had earlier said that farmers were ready to resume talks with the central government on the controversial agricultural laws, but insisted that the discussion should be unconditional.

He had also categorically stated that the farmers’ agitation would not end and said that the protests would continue till the full demands of the farmers were met.

Most farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been camping at the borders of Delhi since November last year to demand the Farmer Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance. And withdraw the Agricultural Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and make a new law to guarantee minimum support prices for crops.
