Father could not pay education loan, father ended his life, after years daughter gave UPSC IAS exam

When Aruna cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021 after five failed attempts, it was a bitter sweet moment for her. Aruna M from Tumkur district of Karnataka is the third of five siblings and all receiving India Rank 308 in his last attempt. Unlike most candidates, Aruna’s first goal was not to crack the civil services. Initially, she intended to get an engineering degree and a simple job, but life had different plans for her.

Aruna’s father committed suicide in 2009 while she was pursuing her engineering studies. His father ended his life as he was unable to pay the mounting debt for the education of his five children. His two elder sisters agreed to work for a few years to support their family, however, their father wanted his daughters to be independent and wanted them to appear in the UPSC exam.

Aruna changes her plan to fulfill her father’s dreams. “I had no dream of clearing the UPSC exam. I just wanted to be an independent woman who could earn Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. My father took it as a challenge to make his daughters independent. But during my engineering course, I lost my father because of the loan taken to provide me education. After his death I felt like giving back to the society. I wanted to find the lost smile of my father by serving the farmers of my country”, said Aruna.

Aruna, who started studying hard in 2014 and attempted UPSC five times, had little chance of qualifying in her last attempt. She was also afraid as a result of routine failures, yet she stopped serving the society.

Aruna founded her own UPSC coaching institute, Aruna Academy, in Bangalore, where she encourages rural youth to apply for UPSC exams.
“I had no hope of clearing UPSC exam and securing 308 rank. I made five attempts but could not succeed. So I started my own academy named Aruna Academy, where my focus has been on helping rural aspirants. In the end, I got success in my sixth attempt,” said Aruna.

My family had made me an independent woman by providing education so wanted to pave way for the children of other farmers who are more backward than me to take benefit of reservation.

Aruna, from backward class, had the option of using the reservation quota in most of the events of her life, but she declined and took the UPSC exam under the unreserved category. After losing her father, she has set a new purpose for herself: she wants to help the country’s farmers.

“My father’s dream has come true now but my dream of serving the farmers of my country and not letting them attempt suicide like my father will start now. My family had made me an independent woman by providing education so wanted to pave the way for the children of other farmers who are more backward than me to take the benefits of reservation”, said Aruna.

“No matter which post I will get but in this field all the posts are equally powerful. Right now I am celebrating these moments with my family and thanking my father for his hardship,” she said.
