At the Fashion X AI show in Hong Kong, over 80 outfits from 14 designers in the spotlight were created with the help of artificial intelligence software called AIDA.

At the Fashion x AI show in Hong Kong, attendees noticed a certain “alien” quality about the new clothes modeled on the event’s narrow catwalk — and the designs weren’t actually entirely human.

The show headlined more than 80 outfits from 14 designers, all created with the help of artificial intelligence software AIDA, which is short for “AI-Based Interactive Design Assistant.” The software was developed by PhD students and academics at the Hong Kong-based AIDLab.

Masked in monochrome blue, dressed in outfits ranging from down jackets to translucent skirts, the models left behind queues of critics and fashion designers.

Attendee Cynthia Tse said it felt like she was witnessing the future of fashion at the Dec. 19 show.

“I think the face covering is definitely alien and exciting,” Tse said.

According to Kelvin Wong, CEO of AidLab, the software was created to serve as a “helper tool” for designers.

Wong said, “AIDA is just an assistant for fashion designers to help them, you know, to work together.” “Designers and AI can work together to come up with the ultimate collection.”

Wong said that the AIDA system is supported by AI technologies such as image recognition, recognition and image generation. Designers can upload draft sketches, materials and color palettes to a virtual mood board, and the software’s algorithm generates blueprints that designers can tweak and add their own flair.

Wong said the system can generate a dozen fashion templates in under 10 seconds, saving designers precious time.

Hong Kong-based fashion designer Mountain Yam has been using AIDA for the past six months and says it has not only saved her time, but also inspired her.

Yama said, “Our relationship is likened to a romantic relationship, in that I felt I was slowly getting to know her (Aida), and she was slowly getting to know my own designs.” “According to my lines, styles and database, the system will propose something to me that I would have never considered, but she (AIDA) thinks is suitable for me. So I believe we are a Developing long term relationships.”

Fashion designer Yulia Tilly said she expected AI to be at the forefront of design collections, noting they weren’t as radical as futuristic collections when she helped start her career.

“I think AI is full of potential and this is really an amazing opportunity for students and professors to collaborate with this really interesting field,” Tilley said.

AIDA was officially launched alongside the Fashion X AI Show, and is available to designers in Europe and Asia Pacific.
