BHUBANESWAR: The Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS), which is an offshoot of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), will take out a padyatra from motihari In A state in Eastern India In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, in protest against the Centre’s three controversial new agricultural laws from October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti).
Over 500 farmers from Odisha will take part in a 350 km foot march, which will culminate in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi on October 20.
Farmers from different states are also likely to participate in the march in the name of Lokniti Satyagraha or Kisan Jan Jagran Padyatra to make people aware about the impact of the three agricultural laws on the lives of common people.
“While the padyatra is an initiative of Navnirman Krishak Sangathan, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha – an umbrella body of organizations fighting for farmers’ rights – is leading the movement. Farmers from Odisha can reach Motihari by dozens of buses and trains by the morning of October 2. from where we will start our padyatra,” said Akshay Kumar, national convener of NKS.
“We are demanding only two things. Repeal agricultural laws and strengthen the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system. The Center should introduce a law to take legal action against anyone who buys agricultural produce at a price below the MSP,” Kumar, who is also a member of the SKM’s national committee, said.
