The son of a farmer living in Uttar Pradesh, who studied with the help of a government scholarship that aims to help low-income but meritorious students, is now set to become an IAS officer. Their aim is to serve the society. Continuing his education despite difficulties and setbacks, Yaksha Chowdhary is an inspiration to many. The soon-to-be IAS, Yaksha passed the exam in his third attempt. Unfazed by his failure, Yaksha continued to improve his performance in the IAS exam with each attempt.
In his first attempt in 2019, he could crack the prelims. While in his second attempt he cracked Prelims, however, Mains, could not clear the interview round and in his third attempt, Yaksha not only cracked UPSC Civil Services Exam but also secured All India Rank 6.
A native of a village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, Yaksha has always been studious. Hailing from a middle-class family, Yaksha relied on a government merit-cum-means scholarship to pursue his B.Tech in civil engineering from IIT Guwahati. Unlike many of his peers who took up jobs through campus placements after earning an IIT degree, he immediately started preparing for the civil services.

“My inspiration comes from my enthusiasm to work for my society. I want to help and solve problems in the society and I think I can do that by being a part of the administration. I always wanted to join UPSC and didn’t choose MTech or anything else,” he says.
Talking about UPSC CSE preparation, Yaksha said, “I didn’t have any strategy but I combined my preparation process for all the three stages of the exam. I focused more on course comprehension and conceptual clarity. I also focused on the answer writing part as it is important in the main round,” he said.
Among the books he relied on, he named Indian Politics by M Laxmikant, Spectrum Books for Modern History, Basic NCERTs for Geography, and Mrunal Patel’s Notes and Videos for Economy and Geography. For his optional subject, which was sociology, he relied heavily on Haralambos and Holborn. For current affairs, he opted for daily news analysis along with newspapers.

When asked what changes he made in the UPSC CSE 2021 attempt and the preparation process in the first two, he explained, “For Prelims, my preparation process remained almost the same, whereas for Mains, I made few changes. I included more diagrams in my third attempt than in previous attempts. Also, the subjects in which I was weak, especially in the Sociology part, I covered all the topics thoroughly to get good marks. Other than that, everything else was the same.”
In the interview round, Yaksha recalled that he was asked questions about sociology and civil engineering. Since he was also involved in athletics during his college days, there were a lot of questions from there as well as some questions were asked about the environment as well.
