‘Farmers protest’ outside Delhi sponsored by Congress: Ruckus in Karnataka assembly after Bommai’s comments

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday termed the anti-agriculture law protests outside Delhi by the Congress as “sponsored”, leading to a heated argument between the ruling BJP and opposition benches in the state assembly. Bommai made this comment during his reply. On the floor of the House on the price hike, which criticized the Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah. “This (farmers’ protest) is sponsored by you (Congress) in Delhi. Farmers’ protest happened around Delhi. It has not happened anywhere else in the country because it is sponsored,” Bommai said.

This was strongly opposed by Congress leaders and MLAs, with party state president DK Shivakumar terming the statement an “insult” to farmers and demanding that Bommai apologize to them. Siddaramaiah termed the remarks as “most irresponsible”.

Bommai’s “sponsored protest” remarks led to a heated argument between the Treasury Bench and Congress legislators, leading to turmoil in the House for some time. The chief minister, however, stood by his remarks, saying there was opposition from farmers, who claimed to be from Punjab. and Haryana, was sponsored. “It has a political background, you have sponsorship in it. It is for MSP (minimum support price) politics,” he said.

Alleging that the commission agents in the markets were also behind the protest as they were worried about the new agricultural laws, he asked the Congress not to ‘mislead’ the people of the country. Responding to a question by senior Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar whether the protest was sponsored by ‘foreign hands’ and who was behind it, Bommai said that these forces were responsible for every protest in the country during Indira Gandhi’s tenure in 1972-75. was convicted. Be it a farmer or a laborer.

“But we are not saying foreign hands, because foreign agents have already been close to the administration. Foreign agents and commission agents who want to control APMC are sponsoring this protest,” he said. Reprimanding Siddaramaiah for his recent remarks, accusing the BJP governments of “criminal loot” in the state and at the Centre, Bommai begins the debate by asking, “Does this mean that governments of all parties have risen in the past? Are the costs involved in criminal robbery?” In response, the LOP said that the CM has accepted the statement that criminal robbery has taken place and pointed out that he had borrowed these words from the former PM, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The late BJP veteran had used it in 1973 as a Jan Sangh MP and Indira Gandhi as prime minister, to protest the seven paise hike in fuel prices. To Bommai’s question as to why he was in “pain” after hearing his reply, Siddaramaiah said, “Why should I feel pain? Narendra Modi and you should be in pain because you people have committed criminal robbery,” resulting in the ruling and K. There was a heated exchange between them. opposition side. Continuing his attack on the Congress, Bommai said, “In our time (petrol price) has increased by 30 per cent… they (Congress or UPA) had increased 60 per cent in their time.” Criminal loot, it’s called Congress loot…not an issue.” This angered Congress members and Siddaramaiah called “BJP loot”, “BJP is indulging in criminal loot”, “Narendra Modi government is looting the country”. shouted slogans like.

Bommai reacted to this saying, ‘Whatever Congress and Siddaramaiah are doing is nothing but the scriptures in the mouth of the devil. By what authority are they saying such things to us? What is your moral right after looting the country for so long?” Both the party members raised slogans accusing each other of looting the country.

Noting that the issue of price hike has been discussed several times in the Assembly, whether the party is in power or in opposition, Bommai said that the increase in the rates of petroleum products started in the 1960s-70s and was followed by many There were reasons. “India is an importer and consumer of crude oil, not a producer…we import 85 per cent, so the price fluctuations in the international market will have an impact on consuming countries like us,” he said.

Pointing out that during the discussion, the opposition legislators targeted the Narendra Modi government only on the issue of price hike, the CM listed the increase in petrol prices since 1973, which ranged between 60 and 150 per cent. “From 2014-2021 the price has increased from Rs 77 to Rs 100, about 30 per cent. Whichever party is in power, its prices are increasing continuously, so it is not right to blame the party in power.

Bommai said that out of Rs 36 lakh crore revenue received from petroleum products since 2014-21, the Center has given about 40 per cent of it to the states. He also said that there has been a faster increase in the procurement of paddy and wheat during the NDA regime as compared to the UPA. Also, the MSP has been increased for various crops and the benefits have been transferred to the farmers.

The CM also accused the Congress of increasing the excise duty over the years. Stating that monetization does not mean sales, he hit back at the Congress’s opposition to the National Monetization Pipeline, saying it was done even during the UPA regime. He cited an amount of Rs 80,000 crore raised from the monetization of the Bombay-Pune highway.

Bommai further attacked Siddaramaiah and the Congress on the issue of sales tax and said that he had no moral right to question the government as it was he who raised it and did not cut it despite demands.
