Farmers don’t want to apologize to PM Modi, don’t want to malign his image abroad: BKU leader Rakesh Tikait

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, who led farmer protests against three agriculture laws proposed by the Center in 2020, said on Sunday that farmers do not want to apologize to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he does not want to malign his image. Huh. Foreign. His statement comes days after the Center repealed three agriculture laws against which several farmers’ unions had been protesting for almost a year.

We do not want the Prime Minister to apologize. We don’t want to tarnish his reputation abroad. If any decision is taken it will not be without the consent of the farmers. We sincerely cultivate the fields but Delhi did not pay heed to our demands.”

Tikait had reacted to Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar’s recent statement of bringing back three repealed agriculture laws, saying the remarks were aimed at deceiving farmers and would also humiliate PM Modi.

At the inauguration of Agro Vision Expo in Nagpur on Friday, Tomar said, “We have brought agriculture laws. Some people didn’t like them but it was a big reform after 70 years of independence which went ahead under the leadership of Narendra Modi ji. But the government is not disappointed. We went a step back and we will move forward again because farmers are the backbone of India and if the backbone is strong then the country will be strong,” the agriculture minister was quoted as saying by local media.

However, the minister later clarified that the Center has no plans to reintroduce agricultural laws and that his statement during an event was misrepresented.

Tikait has threatened to resume the agitation if the agriculture laws are reintroduced by the Centre.

Three agriculture laws were repealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 November. These bills were passed during the winter session of Parliament which began on 23 November.

The farmers, who have been protesting on the Delhi border against the three laws for almost a year, have suspended their agitation and returned to their homes.
