KGF: Chapter 2 has been the highest-grossing Kannada film last year and became a national sensation by breaking box office records.
In yet another achievement for the Kannada film industry, two films have made it to the Oscar competition list for 2023.
The year 2022 has been a great one for Kannada cinema, with the industry shedding the shackles of regional tags and finally churning out pan-India films. Kannada films that did extremely well in Karnataka as well as in the northern region last year include KGF: Chapter 2, 777 Charlie and Kantara. Other films like Vikrant Rona were also appreciated for their unconventional content. In yet another achievement for the Kannada film industry, two films have made it to the Oscar competition list for 2023.
These two films are Kantara and Vikrant Rona. Both films have been selected to be sent to the Oscars—a matter of prestige. While Kannada cinephiles are happy about it, Yash’s fans have been left unsatisfied with the fact that KGF: Chapter 2 was not selected.
KGF: Chapter 2 has been the highest grossing Kannada film last year and became a national sensation by breaking box office records. Hence, the selection of other films while dropping the Yash starrer from the contention list has raised some questions.
Fans are even more shocked as Hombale Films has produced both KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara and they decided to send Kantara but not Kantara. Experts have attributed this selection to the trend of sending more content-driven films to the Oscars instead of commercially successful mass masala films.
More than 10 Indian films have made it to the controversy list, including Rocketry, RRR, Gangubai Kathiawadi and The Kashmir Files. While being on the list is a big step toward getting an Oscar nomination, it doesn’t ensure selection.
On January 24, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will present the official nominees for the 95th Academy Awards, drawn from 301 films from around the world.
