For the first time in the country, the real picture of obesity has come to the fore. This time along with height-weight, waist-hip ratio (WHR) was also measured during the National Family Health Survey-5. Among the women of Madhya Pradesh, this ratio is lowest at 40%, while it is the highest at 88% among the women of Jammu and Kashmir.

In case of males, this ratio is the worst in Chandigarh. There, 67% of men are at risk. Among the larger states, this risk is lowest among men of MP at 39%. Bihar-Jharkhand has the highest (26%) lean women in terms of BMI index. Gujarat is second with 25% lean women. Highest 41% overweight women are in Punjab-Delhi.

The Wealth-Obesity Connection: 28% of those with less wealth, while the wealthy 10% fit

An interesting trend has also been shown in obesity and wealth during the survey. Only 10% of the women fit in the rich class of the country, while the number of such women in families with less wealth is 28%.

waist-hip ratio

The risk has been found to increase with age due to the waist-hip ratio. 46% of girls aged 15 to 19 years are at risk, while it rises to 65% in the age group of 40 to 49. This risk was found to be higher in cities than in villages. 55% in villages, 60% in cities are at risk of diseases due to wrong ratio.

fitness is declining

The number of fit women decreases with age. According to the survey, fit women in the age group of 15 to 19 years are 40%, while in the age group of 40 to 49, only 9% women fall in the fit category. Fit women in villages (21%) were found to be more than those in cities (13%). Talking about overweight, 33% of women are overweight in cities, while 20% in villages.

The higher the ratio, the higher the risk

By waist-hip measurement, 57% of women and 48% of men are at risk of five types of metabolic diseases. They may have to face high blood pressure, high sugar level, excess fat around the waist, lack of good cholesterol.
