Three foreigners living in Greater Noida have been arrested for allegedly indulging in cyber fraud and have been found with fake passports made in the name of filmstars. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a senior police officer said on Friday. The police had registered a cheating FIR on the complaint of a retired army colonel who was duped of Rs 1.81 crore. The official said the probe into the case revealed three accused – two from Nigeria and one from Ghana.
During the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Abhishek Verma said, the police also recovered USD 3,000 (roughly Rs. 2.5 lakh) and £10,500 (roughly Rs. 10.60 lakh) from the possession of the three men. He said the police also seized fake Indian currency notes worth over Rs 10.76 crore, besides dozens of bundles of fake US dollars and British pounds.
“The case of cheating with the retired army officer has been thoroughly investigated and the three main accused in the case – all foreign nationals – have been arrested,” Verma said.
“When his laptop and computer were checked during further investigation, we found fake visa and fake passport copies from him. A fake passport allegedly had a picture of a popular Indian actress.
According to a police statement, the fake passport had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s picture on it. Police said those arrested were identified as AK Uferemwukwe of Nigeria, Okoloi Damian and Edwin Collins of Ghana.
Police said the accused are hardcore cyber criminals, who along with their other associates have been involved in various frauds and have duped gullible people through matrimonial sites, dating apps, social media sites, lottery fraud etc. According to the police, they duped the retired army colonel on the pretext of buying herbs for cancer treatment.
Police said they have seized six mobile phones, 11 SIM cards, laptop, printer and some other gadgets used by the gang in criminal activities. The police have also seized three cars of the accused.
