Lucknow: With almost five months left for the high voltage Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday announced a hike in the purchase price of sugarcane in the state by Rs 25 per quintal in a major move.

Addressing a meeting of farmers, Yogi Adityanath said, “The government has decided that the price of the variety of sugarcane for which farmers were paid Rs 325 per quintal has been increased to Rs 350. The payment will be made to the farmers.” Janata Party (BJP) Kisan Morcha in Lucknow.

The Chief Minister said that the government has also decided to increase the price of ordinary sugarcane from Rs 315 per quintal to Rs 340 per quintal.

“The government has also decided to increase the price of ‘aapuit’ (low yielding) sugarcane by Rs 25 per quintal,” he said.

Adityanath said that this would increase the income of sugarcane farmers by 8 percent and change the lives of 45 lakh farmers.

The Chief Minister further said that 119 sugar mills would be operated, connecting them with ethanol.

Meanwhile, Adityanath, who has exuded confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will return to power in Uttar Pradesh with an overwhelming majority in next year’s assembly elections, is likely to expand his cabinet this evening.

Seven new faces will be included in the cabinet. Dharamveer Prajapati, Chhatrapal Gangwar, Jitin Prasada, Sangeeta Balwant, Chhatrapal Gangwar, Ashish Patel and Sanjay Gaur are likely to take oath as ministers.

This will be the second cabinet expansion of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier on 22 August 2019, the cabinet was expanded for the first time. Many new faces were then inducted into the cabinet, while some were dropped. At that time there were 56 members in the cabinet.

Three ministers Chetan Chauhan, Kamal Rani Varun and Vijay Kashyap died due to Kovid-19.

At present, there are 53 ministers in the Yogi cabinet, including 23 cabinet ministers, 9 ministers of independent charge and 21 ministers of state.

According to the Constitution of India, the Uttar Pradesh Council of Ministers, including the Chief Minister, can have a maximum of 60 members. There are currently seven vacant positions.
