Anti-Naxal Campaign: In a major anti-Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur, a constable of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was injured when a pressure improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxals exploded, police said on Wednesday (June 21).

The security forces busted the Naxalite camp by conducting a big campaign in the district and also recovered a stock of explosives.

Police said several encounters took place during the entire operation, which began on Monday in core forest areas near Pidiya village under Gangalur police station area, over 450 km from state capital Raipur.

“Two-three Maoists were killed or injured,” the police said.

A police official said the operation was launched by separate joint teams of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite unit of CRPF, Special Task Force and DRG from Bijapur and Dantewada districts on Monday.

“There were several encounters between security personnel and Maoists at various places on Tuesday,” he said. The official said the security forces busted a hideout of Maoists and recovered explosives, sewing material and medicines.

“The security forces also destroyed a memorial of Maoists,” he said.

He informed that a constable, identified as Ajay Mandavi, who belonged to Dantewada DRG, on his way back after operation on Wednesday stepped on a pressure IED, which led to the explosion.

“The constable has suffered minor injuries. He has been admitted to Bijapur district hospital for treatment,” he said.

Last month, two CoBRA soldiers were injured in an encounter with Naxalites in Bijapur. IG Bastar P Sundarraj said that the police had received inputs about the planning of IED attack by Maoists in Pusnar and Hiroli village area.

Subsequently, a District Reserve Guard (DRG), CoBRA force from Gangalur police station was sent for the search operation. During the operation, an encounter broke out between the CoBRA forces and the Naxals, in which two jawans were injured.
