Exit polls are predictions made by media organizations using random or systematic sampling methods that predict election winners before the results are released. Predictions are usually based on questions asked by voters, such as which party they voted for and why. After taking feedback, organizations decode political trends to determine which party or candidate is most likely to win which constituency.
The Election Commission of India had barred print and electronic media organizations from sharing exit polls as well as publishing or publishing predictions for election results between February 10 and March 7.
“No person shall conduct any exit poll and publish or publicize the results of any exit poll in print or in any other manner,” the poll body said in its order.
During the elections, 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh went to polls in seven phases. Goa has 40 assembly seats while Uttarakhand has 70 seats. Polling was also held in Punjab for 117 seats while in Manipur, polling was held in two phases for 60 seats.
