'Excellent': PM shares video of 'more than 3000 blackbucks' crossing a road

Galloping away, the herd was seen leaping high in the air.

New Delhi:

Thousands of blackbucks were seen crossing a road in a national park in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district in a stunning video shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Excellent!” How did PM Modi describe this sight?

The video of a large herd at Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, originally tweeted by Gujarat’s information department, was retweeted by the prime minister.

According to the department, “more than 3,000 blackbucks” were part of the herd that were seen galloping high in the air.

Blackbucks are protected animals and their hunting has been banned under the Wildlife Act since 1972. They are now part of the endangered species list after their numbers declined due to widespread hunting, deforestation and habitat degradation once widespread across the Indian subcontinent.

Velavadar National Park, an hour’s drive north of Bhavnagar, is famous for its blackbuck population. Situated on the banks of the Gulf of Khambhat in the south, this sanctuary is spread over an area of 34 square kilometers. Apart from blackbucks, the park is also home to a large number of bird and animal species. Many species of migratory birds like pelicans and flamingos can also be seen here.
