Abhijit Ganguly, former Calcutta High Court judge turned BJP member, demands CM Mamata Banerjee’s resignation after court ruling affecting teaching staff

Abhijit Ganguly, who resigned from his position as a judge in Calcutta High Court last month and joined BJP, has demanded an “immediate resignation” of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He raised this demand after a bench of the Calcutta High Court declared the full panel of teaching and non-teaching staff recruited under the School Service Commission of 2016 as null and void. The order bears political significance as it may lead to the cancellation of jobs for 23,753 teaching and non-teaching staff who were recruited through the commission. However, CM Banerjee called the order “illegal” and said that the state would move the SC.

‘Treacherous government’

Talking to News18, Ganguly, who initiated the proceedings and directed the CBI to investigate the allegations, said, “This treacherous government headed by Mamata Banerjee must resign immediately. The government has done grave injustice to the people of the state, including Hindus and Muslims. They sold employment to some people who were not even eligible and earned a huge amount of money. The eligible candidates, Hindus, and Muslims, were deprived.”

Ganguly, after resigning from the judiciary, joined BJP and was declared as the candidate of BJP in Tamluk in East Midnapore district. “She (the chief minister) protected those who committed such crimes. Why is the government moving the SC? I can understand if the affected people want to appeal or re-appeal, but what is the government’s interest?” he said, questioning the state government’s move to appeal to the SC in this regard.

Judgments “politicised”?

Senior Trinamool Congress leaders, including the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, questioned the earlier judgments of Abhijit Ganguly and his integrity as a judge. Reacting to the allegations, he said, “They are all ignorant people, they are fools. They don’t understand (law).”

Talking about the deprivation of both Hindus and Muslims, he said, “Narendra Modi government’s schemes are not caste, class, or religion-oriented. The schemes are for all. The BJP does not do politics over government schemes.” He further added that the new innings in life as a politician have been “fantastic.” “I am enjoying every bit of it. I am getting exposed to so many new issues, which I was not aware of. People are coming and meeting me, telling their issues. It is an amazing feeling,” he said.
