SHAMLI/MEERUT: Hours after polling ended on Thursday, Samajwadi Party’s Kairana candidate Nahid Hasan’s sister, Iqra Hasan, found an “abandoned” EVM in a vehicle parked near a highway. The car had a sticker that said ‘zonal magistrate, Kairana constituency’.
SP workers immediately took up the matter with Election Commission (EC) officials, who maintained it was a “reserve” EVM. But the vehicle was allowed to leave only after Shamli district magistrate (DM) Jasjit Kaur issued a show-cause notice to the zonal magistrate. A request for action against the official was also sent to the EC on Friday.
Kaur said, “We informed SP workers that the EVM in the car was a reserve one. The reason that the car had no number plate is incorrect. As a matter of protocol, we have issued a show-cause notice to the zonal magistrate and a letter has been sent to EC, Lucknow, to take action against the official.”
