Everyday Health: How does Ayurveda help in post-Covid patient care?

A year and a half after the coronavirus pandemic ravaged our collective lives, our society continues to grapple with fear and insecurity. What are some of the COVID related diet protocols prescribed by the Ministry of AYUSH?

Warm water should be consumed daily. Use ginger, garlic, coriander, mint, turmeric, clove, sesame etc. while cooking. Take a light diet in the evening. Vegetable soup should be consumed daily. These are simple ways to balance your diet and build good immunity. They’re also inexpensive, and they’re things we usually do anyway. However, using household spices wisely, and eating a clean diet and eating consciously can be of great benefit.

Herbal teas made from black pepper, cinnamon, jaggery, grapefruit and lemon are essential for maintaining and boosting immunity, so make sure to include them in your diet. Before sleeping at night, a glass of cow’s milk mixed with 1 teaspoon of turmeric should be drunk.

Can severe cases of COVID19 be treated with Ayurveda? How does Ayurveda help in treating mild or moderate cases?

Patients who could not avail ventilators had opted for Ayurvedic herb-mineral preparation and infusion Arishta Kalpana during the second wave. Several Ayurvedic medicines have also proved beneficial in increasing the SPO2 levels within a few hours.

It is necessary to take these medicines under the supervision of Ayurvedic doctors. About 70 percent mild/moderate cases can be cured with proper diet and yoga-pranayama as mentioned in the advisory of Ministry of AYUSH. Dashmool Kwath, Pathyadi Kwath, Sanshamani, Ayush-63 were administered in mild and moderate cases.

How to increase immunity through Ayurveda?

Acquired immunity can be increased by taking a proper and balanced diet. Good sleep, physical exercise, stress management through pranayama and meditation, and timely detoxification of the body are also important immune-boosting practices.

How can Ayurveda help in providing post-Covid care?

Ayurveda was very beneficial in Mucormycosis and Hyperglycaemia in the post COVID situation. Ayurveda treatments have shown a dramatic effect to reduce the increased levels of D-dimer. Certain herbs have played an important role in controlling the toxicity of hepatotoxic antibiotics as well as antiviral drugs used during the COVID pandemic.

How is Yoga related to Ayurveda? How does yoga help in managing COVID?

Yoga is an integral part of Ayurveda. Yogic therapy was more important in mild and moderate cases. Various pranayama and breathing techniques are beneficial for increasing the air holding capacity of the lungs. Various yoga postures i.e. asanas have shown their effect to digest food properly. In particular, meditation and meditation were very beneficial in stress management and insomnia.
