Eternal critics reviews: Chloe Zhao directorial becomes MCU’s lowest rated film of all time

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans may be looking forward to its upcoming film Eternal, but the mixed reviews from film critics to its release have earned it the lowest-rated title of any MCU film ever. The film is yet to be released to audiences on November 5, but the film’s initial world premiere in Los Angeles, Rome and London drew critics who got to see the film earlier than audiences.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ reviews for Eternal and its initial reactions aren’t as impressive. The film currently has a rating of only 61%, which makes Chloe Zhao’s directorial debut the lowest-rated Marvel Studios film on the platform, just below the 2013 film Thor: The Dark World, which has a rating of 66%.

One of the critics, Dana Stevens, commented on the website with his review, writing, “Zhao, a director whose last three films focused on the everyday lives of rural outsiders, was unsuitable for a film of this kind. Looks massive and clearly not interested in fight scenes.” Another critic, Sean Chandler, commented, “Although I can respect that the MCU took a risk by telling an ambitious and different story The story and storytelling didn’t match the ambitions of the film.”

However, the film has received some praiseworthy reviews, with critic Austin Burke commenting, “The film is massive on every level, both with its story and scale. At times, the narrative can be a bit messy.” But its heart always shines. Zhao has created something different from the rest of the MCU.”

It should be noted that many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes do not include a diverse group of audiences. The review of the global audience is yet to come and only then the full review of the film can be assessed. Rotten Tomatoes reviews only represent the opinions of professional film critics, not the audiences who largely consume the content. This can be taken as a reference point and not an indicator of the massive success of the film. As for Eternal, Rotten Tomatoes has yet to incorporate audience ratings into its overall score for the film.

Eternal stars Emma Chan, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Richard Madden, Don Lee, Harish Patel and Kit Harington.
