Two run outs and some poor shot selection from the tourists saw them slip to 224 for seven and give England a glimmer of hope that they can get the Kiwis out early on Tuesday and then hold on to the target.

All outcomes are possible, although a draw seems the most likely outcome and the main source of encouragement for New Zealand is that in-form Daryl Mitchell is unbeaten on 32 and will resume looking to score a score beyond England’s reach .

Mitchell scored 190 runs in the first innings to complete his century at Lord’s in the first Test defeat and he looked comfortable on a good batting surface.

In the opening session, New Zealand took a 14-run first innings lead after bowling out the hosts for 539 with Trent Boult taking a five-wicket haul, after thrashing through England’s lower order.

England added just 66 runs for their final five-wicket haul but achieved a swift breakthrough with James Anderson’s bowling captain Tom Latham (4).

Anderson’s 650th Test wicket was helped by Latham’s erroneous decision to drop the ball and England hoped to put pressure in the afternoon session, with the pacers showing signs of movement.

But a century partnership between Young and Devon Conway restored the bat’s dominance on the ball which was evident throughout the match, before a quick shot gave England hope.

Conway (52) attempted to sweep Jack Leach, which Jonny Bairstow took over deep square leg to bring Henry Nicholls to the crease before tea.

But in the first over after the break, England pulled a short wide delivery with Nicholls (3) straight down Alex Lee to backward point.

Will Young had looked in good form, scoring 56 before being run out after a mix-up with Mitchell, Ollie Pope showing a shrewd alertness to return to the non-striker’s end.

Tom Blundell scored 24 before a short, rising delivery from Stuart Broad to Ben Stokes at backward square, as the England captain sat on the pavilion balcony pointing at the new coach, New Zealander Brendon McCullum, indicating a plan .

Michael Bracewell tried to force matters with a 17-ball 25, but his attempt to top Matt Potts ended with the ball in the hands of Broad at mid-on.

Another run out gave England their seventh wicket, with Mitchell blinded for the second run, sending back Tim Southee who was stranded.
