- What should I follow:
England broke their own world record as they scored a mammoth 498/4 against the Netherlands in an ODI at Amstelveen. Three men scored centuries and England bettered their own world record of 481 which they posted against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018. While Phil Salt scored 122 runs in 93 balls, David Malan scored 125 runs in 109 balls. Jos Buttler then came out and scored the fastest 150 for England, missing the fastest 150 scored by AB de Villiers. Also, Liam Livingstone, who came out to bat on 6, was the most brutal as he scored the fastest fifty for England in ODIs. He was also on the verge of the fastest half-century, but missed it after the bowler bowled a brilliant yorker.
Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan returned to the team as captain and was dismissed for naught. While Jason Roy also managed to score just one run after pulling one back from his own cousin. Interestingly, the venue has seen scores of over 400 in the past, when Sri Lanka scored 443 in 2006, which was a world record at the time. Meanwhile, this is not the first time that England have scored 400 runs. This will be his third such score as he scored 444/3 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2016. The same venue saw him score 481 against arch-rivals Australia in 2018. And today is the third.
Meanwhile, South Africa have scored more than 400 runs four times, one more than England. Here are the top ten highest team totals.
England | 498/4 | 50 | 9.96 | v Netherlands | amstelven |
England | 481/6 | 50 | 9.62 | v Australia | Nottingham |
England | 444/3 | 50 | 8.88 | in Pakistan | Nottingham |
Sri Lanka | 443/9 | 50 | 8.86 | v Netherlands | amstelven |
South Africa | 439/2 | 50 | 8.78 | vs West Indies | johannesburg |
South Africa | 438/9 | 49.5 | 8.78 | v Australia | johannesburg |
South Africa | 438/4 | 50 | 8.76 | in India | Wankhede |
Australia | 434/4 | 50 | 8.68 | vs south africa | johannesburg |
South Africa | 418/5 | 50 | 8.36 | vs Zimbabwe | Potchefstroom |
India | 418/5 | 50 | 8.36 | vs West Indies | Indore |
The Proteas scored 434 against Australia in 2006, where they chased down that target against Australia with just one wicket remaining. Since then they have scored 400 runs against Zimbabwe, West Indies and India, thus becoming the only team with four 400-plus scores. With the advent of T20 cricket, where batsmen chase down the bowler mercilessly, the potential for totals in excess of 400 on smaller grounds against weak opposition is immense. Amstelveen is one of the smallest grounds in the world and an England team, which had explosive batsmen, had touched 400 in the 40th over itself, so they created the most conditions.
