England’s limited-overs captain Jos Buttler called the team’s 10-wicket loss to India in the first ODI a “tough defeat”.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami folded up England’s top order for the Three Lions for the bottom of 110 in just 25.2 overs at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday (July 12).

Players like Jason Roy, Joe Root and Ben Stokes went for ducks as Bumrah took six wickets while Shami took three. England’s bowling unit also failed to break the unbeaten 114-run opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan after getting out badly with the bat.

Butler said at the press conference, ‘Yes, obviously a very disappointing day. It was a tough defeat.

“Obviously there was a little bit in the wicket at the start and I thought Jasprit Bumrah particularly highlighted it well. We had the big guns coming back.

“They’ve all been in some of the best form of their lives playing Test cricket, so it proves that it wasn’t easy but we should look and think if there is any way we can manage it better. Well, try and don’t lose as many wickets in the beginning and we have to learn quickly.”

Captain Butler backed his players’ good performance in the second ODI against India at Lord’s on 14 July.

“You certainly don’t want days like these to come. They are few and far between, and today is one of those days, and it’s hard to take, but of course we’ll try to learn from it as much as we can, but We’ll stick to what we know and there’s a lot of confidence in that dressing room that there are some great players out there, so I’d like to see the reaction again on Thursday.
