Empire Director on Game of Thrones Comparison: It’s a Compliment for Our Show

Ever since the trailer of Nikkhil Advani’s The Empire, the Mughal-era series dropped, netizens have been comparing it with the popular HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones, which has spent many years as a worldwide sensation, winning awards There are critical acclaim, and staunch fans along the way. When we asked The Empire director Mitakshara Kumar about the comparison, she said, “I had not seen The Game of Thrones when we were shooting for Empire. I didn’t want to watch it because I didn’t want to be influenced by the show. now I have. I saw it in May this year. I really liked it but it is like a fantasy drama. I don’t agree if you just look at two people fighting and a battle scene and start comparing. But if people are saying that (The Empire) looks like this is a compliment which I humbly accept.”

Shot across multiple locations in India and Uzbekistan, The Empire features elaborate sets and expansive landscapes. The 8-episode series is based on ‘Empire of the Muggle: Raiders from the North’ by Alex Rutherford.

The period drama has a strong ensemble cast including actors Shabana Azmi, Drishti Dhami, Dino Morea, Aditya Seal, Saher Bamba and Rahul Dev among others.

Mitakshara, who is making her directorial debut with the Disney+ Hotstar series, has previously worked as a chief assistant director under Bhansali Productions for several years. Talking about his experience working in the series, he said, “Whatever training Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave me, I put it into this show. This is my vision. It’s a huge show that came to me and I just tried to be honest with my characters and the story. We have created this show with a lot of hard work and detailing.”

He further said that turning the book into a screenplay is “the hardest thing to do. There are so many details in the book and it is very difficult to choose what you want to show on screen. Also, when you bring its characters on screen. , you have to show the entire journey which requires the efforts of many people from costume designer to set designer and direction team. It took us almost one and half year to make this show. So, it has been a very long process. “

Empire follows a young prince who is tasked with taking over the entire Fergana kingdom after his king dies in an accident. Streaming of the series will begin on August 27 on Disney Plus Hotstar.
