Singer-songwriter Grimes recently revealed that she has secretly welcomed a baby girl with Elon Musk in December 2021 via a surrogate.
People Magazine obtained excerpts from Grimes’ cover story for the April 2022 issue of Vanity Fair.
Grimes, 33, who is also the mother of a 22-month-old son with the Tesla founder, 50 — shares the baby’s full name, Axa Dark Siderell, though they have nicknamed him Y.
Grimes explains his daughter’s unique name to the outlet, saying that exa refers to a supercomputing term, exaflops, while dark represents the “unknown”.

She explained, “People are afraid of it but really it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.”
Siderail is the third part of the Y’s full name, pronounced “ah-deer-ee-l”. Grimes called Siderell’s spelling “greater elf”, which he defined as “the true time of the universe, not star time, deep space time, not Earth time relative to us”.
The siderail also has a dual meaning, as a shout-out to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel, who “chooses to forsake the Ring.”
Grimes also shared that she was “fighting” to name her daughter Odysseus Musk, because “a girl named Odysseus is my dream,” but she and Musk settled on AXA Dark Siderail instead.
Despite splitting in September 2021 after three years together, Grimes and Musk are back together.
“There’s no real word for it,” she said. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we are very fluid. We live in different houses. We are best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our talk. and I don’t expect others to understand it.
She said she and Musk are happy together, telling the outlet, “It’s the best we’ve ever had. … We just need to be free.”
She also shared that they plan to have more kids: “We always want at least three or four.”
