Election 2022: FIR against Babita Phogat of BJP for flouting Kovid rules during election campaign

New Delhi: An FIR was registered against wrestler Babita Phogat for organizing a rally and violating the COVID-19 norms issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Phogat was campaigning for BJP candidate Krishnapal S Malik in Baraut assembly in Baghpat on Monday. 63 others were also mentioned in the FIR.

The ECI on Saturday extended the ban on physical rallies till January 31 in view of the situation of Kovid-19 in the country.

In a press note issued on Saturday, January 22, the ECI had said, “No road show, pad-yatra, cycle/bike/vehicle rally and procession shall be permitted till January 31, 2022.”

However, public meetings of political parties to decide on candidates for Phase 1 and 2 are allowed with certain restrictions after January 28.

Simultaneously, the number of door-to-door preachers was also increased from five to ten.

In addition, video vans for promotional purposes have also been allowed, with certain restrictions, keeping in view the COVID-19 appropriate behaviour.

Voting in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases from February 10. Polling will be held in the second phase on February 14, in the third phase on February 20, in the fourth phase on February 23, in the fifth phase on February 27. Polling will be held in the sixth phase on March. 3.

The seventh and final phase of polling will be held on March 7 and the results of the assembly elections will be declared on March 10.

All the major parties have already released their list of candidates and star campaigners for the first two phases of the assembly elections.
