Despite Sergio Aguero’s 97th-minute goal, Real Madrid scored three points in a 2–1 win over Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

In what was the first Clásico without Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo since 2007, neither side disappointed the visitors after a 1-0 lead in Madrid’s first half thanks to a David Alaba stunner.

While the start of the match did not live up to expectations, the second half was a back and forth affair where both teams had excellent chances to score, but each side missed many opportunities to add to the scoreline.

Looking for an equalizer late in Barca’s extra time, Memphis Depay went to Gerard Pique who fell in the area and asked for a penalty. The referee refused to blow the whistle and Madrid were out of the race.

The counter was led by Marco Asensio, whose shot from the left was blocked by Barca keeper Ter Stegen, but Lucas Vazquez bounced off the ball in the 94th minute to secure three points for Madrid.

Argentina’s Aguero scored a last-second goal to bolster the scoreline, but that wasn’t all as the referee soon whistled full-time.

A win sends Madrid to the top of La Liga, while a loss moves Barcelona to 8th place in the table.
