Eight killed in violence during farmers’ protest in UP village

Eight people were killed in violence during farmers’ protests over the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

The report said angry farmers set two SUVs on fire when they rammed a group of protesters.

Sources said that four of the dead were in vehicles and the rest were farmers.

Violence broke out after two SUVs allegedly rammed into a group of anti-agriculture law protesters protesting against Maurya’s visit on the Tikonia-Banbirpur road here.

Angry protesters allegedly forced two vehicles to stop, torched them and thrashed some passengers.

There are also reports of several journalists getting injured in the incident.

Maurya’s tour was canceled after the incident.

SKM demand

The United Kisan Morcha (SKM) demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the incident.

SKM leaders, who addressed a press conference here on Sunday, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expel Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, accusing him of inciting violence against farmers. He said that Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra should be booked under section 302 of IPC for killing farmers. The SKM has also decided to hold a protest in front of every district headquarters on Monday, demanding action against those responsible for the violence.

more protests planned

SKM leader Yogendra Yadav said they would strengthen the protest in the backdrop of the fresh violence. All India Kisan Sabha leader P Krishnaprasad said Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar should also resign for his call to BJP workers to attack farmers. “BJP workers have implemented Khattar’s instructions and killed four farmers in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Congress hit

Congress targeted the BJP and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident and strict action against the culprits. Rahul Gandhi said those who remain silent even after the incident are already dead and underlined that the farmers’ sacrifice will not go in vain.
