England head coach Brendon McCullum’s appearance in online betting advertisements has landed him in a tussle with the country’s cricket board (ECB), where it is being investigated whether it breaches the governing body’s anti-corruption rules .

The former New Zealand captain appeared in online advertisements after joining betting outfit 22Bet as an ambassador in January. They shared a video on their Facebook page on 27 March promoting 22Bet’s markets on the Indian Premier League.

“We are looking into this matter and have discussed with Brendan about his relationship with 22Bet,” the ECB was quoted as saying by the BBC.

“We have rules around gambling and we will always try to ensure that these are followed.”

The Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand made a complaint to the ECB about the ads last week.

According to the ECB’s anti-discrimination code “directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, Instructing, persuading, encouraging, facilitating or authorizing” or competition” is an offence.

The Code states that such an offense will carry a minimum period of “disqualification” of one year.

England have won 10 of their last 12 Tests since McCullum took over as coach early last summer.
