Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday said she would write to the Election Commission seeking a ban on surveys of media organizations and other agencies six months before any election so that elections in a particular state are not affected by it. Addressing the BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s 15th death anniversary at the Kanshi Ram memorial site, Mayawati demanded that the late Dalit leader be given Bharat Ratna and said that the people of Uttar Pradesh have made up their mind to change power in the state.
“Soon a letter will be written to the Election Commission that under the guise of trade, the survey by media organizations and other agencies should be banned six months before the elections, so that elections in the particular state are not affected,” he said. “You know that when the assembly elections were going on in West Bengal, the surveys were showing that Mamata Banerjee was trailing, but when the results came, it was the opposite. Those who were dreaming of getting power, their dreams were shattered and Mamata (Banerjee) returned with a huge majority. So, you should not be misled by these surveys,” the BSP chief told the public.
Mayawati’s remarks come a day after a survey by a news channel showed that the BJP is set to win the maximum number of seats and retain power in UP in the upcoming 2022 assembly elections. He also said that the BJP-led central and Uttar Pradesh governments are using the state machinery to create an atmosphere in their favour.
“It is also known to all that when these tactics do not work, that party (BJP) will eventually give a Hindu-Muslim color to the election, and try to take full political advantage under its guise. Keeping this in mind the election should be fought. Mayawati, without naming any party, also said, “There are small parties and organizations, which can contest elections alone or jointly. Their job is not to win elections, but to benefit the ruling party from behind the scenes, to fulfill their vested interests. Therefore, people belonging to these castes and communities should not come under the influence of these parties and organisations.”
Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar had last month claimed that Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad would soon be part of the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha and a formal announcement in this regard would be made at a rally on October 27.
This front is a front of like-minded political parties led by former BJP ally Rajbhar. The AIMIM had recently announced that it would contest 100 seats in the state assembly elections next year in alliance with the Rajbhar-led SBSP and its partner Sankalp Morcha.
Rajbhar, who was a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, had resigned in 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Later he started the Partnership Sankalp Morcha as a political front of smaller parties.
