The Election Commission (EC) has issued an ‘advisory’ to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for his controversial remarks against the state’s Congress leadership. Ahead of the Telangana Assembly polls scheduled in the upcoming week, the CM was asked to follow the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct in “letter and spirit”.

Rao had made certain threatening remarks against the Congress leadership on October 30 in the Banswada constituency of Telangana after an attack on a member of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) which is led by him.

Following his remarks, a leader from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had approached the poll panel demanding action against Rao. The advisory read, “You are hereby advised to follow the provisions of the MCC in letter and spirit.”

The letter was intented to remind the BRS leader about the EC’s instruction that all the political parties, their leaders in all capacities and the contesting candidates must observe utmost restraint and decency in their speeches. The poll panel also said that leaders must set an example in maintaining high standards of conduct and behaviour during the course of their poll campaigs.

The campaigns for the November 30 polls will end in the evening of November 28.
