Launching the campaign on the last day of seeking votes for the February 27 Erode (East) bypoll, DMK President Stalin said his party has never failed to deliver on its promises or announcements.

Chief Minister MK Stalin said here on Saturday that the ruling DMK’s much talked about monthly assistance scheme for every woman head of the household in Tamil Nadu would be announced in the upcoming state budget.

Launching the campaign on the last day of seeking votes for the February 27 Erode (East) bypoll, DMK President Stalin said his party has never failed to deliver on its promises or announcements.

In the face of strong criticism from opposition parties, he asserted that the DMK’s poll promise of providing Rs 1,000 per month to every woman head of the household would definitely be implemented.

“The date of implementation (of the scheme) will be announced in the budget in March,” Stalin said, seeking votes for Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan, who is contesting on behalf of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.

The CM said that 85 per cent of DMK’s poll promises have been implemented and the rest will be completed by the end of this year.

In his address, he elaborated on the implementation of development works and other schemes for the people, mainly free travel concession to women in state-run buses, free breakfast to students in government schools and free electricity to farmers.

Seeking votes for Elangovan, grandson of rationalist leader EVR Periyar, the chief minister recalled DMK founder late CN Annadurai and late party chief M Karunanidhi who had associated with the Dravidian stalwart in Erode in the ‘Kudiyarasu’ newspaper.

In some places, Stalin went to voters and sought support for Elangovan.

The results of the by-election will come on March 2.
