Dussehra 2021: Homemade sweets to make your Navratri and Dussehra happy

India, being a country with a rich history and tradition, is a veritable treasure trove of exquisite cuisine associated with the festivities. Food is an essential staple of all Indian festivals. Indians communicate their affection through food and sweets from north to south and east to west. From Diwali sweets of laddus, cashew barfi, and gulab jamun to gujiyas eaten during Holi to modaks on Ganesh Chaturthi to rasgullas for Durga Puja, there is much more.

Instead of elaborate presentation and expensive ingredients, here are some quick and easy ways to satiate your sweet tooth this Dussehra.

Cashew Boilers

One of the most popular sweets is Kaju ki Barfi, also known as Kaju Katli. Traditionally, cashew katli is prepared by heating sugar syrup to a string consistency and then adding powdered cashews. This method gives excellent results as the mixing is not overdone and the burfi drains completely.

Gulab Jamun

Gulab jamuns, often referred to as Indian donuts, are deep-fried dumplings dipped in sugar syrup flavored with rose water. Very sweet, one gulab jamun will be enough to satisfy your hunger (unless you have an insatiable sweet tooth, of course).

Rasmalai

Rasmalai can easily be considered as a royal sweet. A delightfully aromatic dish of milk syrup filled with cardamom with paneer dumplings. Rasmalai is a specialty of West Bengal which is popular all over India. In three easy steps, making chhena or paneer requires curdling of milk, which is then boiled in sugar syrup, and soaked in condensed milk or rabri.

Laddoos

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, making laddus is easy. Depending on the region, these ball-shaped sweets are usually made of chickpea flour, semolina or powdered coconut. After cooling, the batter is cooked into a paste and formed into balls.

Moong Dal Halwa

A classic Indian dessert, moong dal halwa is made with soaked moong dal paste, deep-roasted in ghee and sugar, then topped with a garnish of dry fruits. A mouth-watering way to end a meal, it is both delicious and aromatic.
