Just like in real life, festivals and celebrations are also an important part of Bollywood movies. With the grand festive season just around the corner, it would be unfair not to talk about this mix. Bollywood films are largely plotted around the underlying theme of the victory of good over evil, which marks Dussehra. Hence, Bollywood filmmakers have often incorporated the festival into their story and used it as an important backdrop. As we celebrate Dussehra today, we take a look at some of the major films that have used Dussehra celebrations-

The Dussehra festival finds its place in the song Pal Pal Hai Bhaari in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Swades. The song features actress Gayatri dressed up as Sita and performing the Ashok Vatika scene with Ravana

One of the recent films to mark Dussehra was Abhishek Varman’s multi-starrer Kalank. The sequence in which Alia Bhatt’s character Roop resembles Zafar, played by Varun Dhawan, has the background of burning the effigy of Ravana.

Ra One

Director Anubhav Sinha’s Ra.One was a modern retelling of Ramayana, but with a sci-fi twist. So, when the film’s antagonist Arjun Rampal aka Ra.One enters real life from a video game, he is shown walking in the background of an effigy of Ravana.

Delhi 6

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 revolves around Chandni Chowk in Delhi and one of the recurring themes of the film was Ramlila and Dussehra. The film highlighted the fear that resides within man, the importance of identifying good and evil. In one scene, the characters are seen watching a theatrical depiction of Ramlila.

The climactic scene of Madhuri Dixit’s Prem Granth shows her character Kajri taking revenge on one of her wrongdoers, Roop Sahay, played by Govind Namdev by tying him to an effigy of Ravana. Kajari sets it on fire with the effigy symbolizing the victory of Mal over evil.
