importance of dussehra

The name Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (ten) and hara (necklace). It marks the victory of Rama over Ravana (the 10 headed demon king). Dussehra or Vijayadashami is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Ashwin (September-October) of the Hindu calendar. Dussehra also marks the end of the nine-day Navratri festival. Dussehra, for many, marks the beginning of preparations for the Diwali festival – when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya – which falls 20 days after Dussehra.

Ceremonies and Rituals

Before Diwali, people celebrate Dussehra with full pomp and religious fervor. Hindu devotees in North India organize Ramlila – a dramatic enactment of the story of the life of Lord Rama – in the days to come and on Dussehra. On Dussehra, huge effigies of Ravana, sometimes accompanied by his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhakaran, are set ablaze in the open ground.

In West Bengal, people celebrate this occasion as Durga Puja festival to mark the victory of the goddess over the demon Mahishasura. Devotees worship Durga in various theme-based pandals.

In Gujarat, people celebrate the festival through Garba – the state’s famous folk dance. During both Navratri and Dussehra, people wear colorful clothes and celebrate the festival as much as possible.

In South India, people bring home the idols of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Married women also visit each other’s houses and exchange gifts like coconut, betel nut and even money.
